Thomas Lander made his operatic debut at Vadstena akademien in 1980. In 1982/83 he sang HERMANN/SCHLEMIHL in Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann at Norrlandsoperan in northern Sweden. After completing his studies in 1986 Rolf Liebermann and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf invited him to the Mozarteum in Salzburg where he sang CONTE D’ALMAVIVA in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro. His debut at the Hamburgischen Staatsoper followed in 1986 as CONTE D’ALMAVIVA. Between 1987 and 1989 Mr. Lander was engaged at the Wiener Volksoper. From 1990 to 1995 an engagement at the Niedersächsische Staatsoper Hannover followed. Mr Lander is a freelance opera and concert artist since 1995 with Sweden as his base.

During the same period as he was engaged abroad he also appeared as a guest artist at numerous German opera houses and made his debut as GULIELMO at the festival d’Aix-en-Provence and as HARLEKIN at the Opéra de Lyon.

Working as a freelance artist since 1995 Mr Lander appears predominantly in his native Sweden: Stockholm’s Folkoperan, Drottningholms Slottsteater, Malmö Musikteater, Norrlandsoperan and the Gothenburg Opera. Autumn 2003 he sang his first SCARPIA in Puccini’s TOSCA in a new produktion at  Stockholm’s Folkoperan directed by Jasenko Selimovic. He returned to Stockholm’s Folkoperan in 2005 and sang MERCUTIO in Gounod’s Romeo and Juliet. In winter/spring 2006 he joined the Gothenburg Opera where he sang FORD in Verdi’s Falstaff and PING in Turandot by Puccini. In winter 2007 Mr Lander sang his first major Wagnerian role performing the title role in DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER at Norrlandsoperan, Umeå, Sweden. In summer 2007 he sang the role of SCARPIA, this time at the Ystadsoperan Summer-festival.

From September 2007 to April 2008 Mr Lander returned to Norrlandsoperan where he sang among other things, HAVGRAD, one of the leading roles in the world premier of Poet and Prophetess by Mats Larsson Gothe. In the summer followed SCARPIA, this time at Opera på Skäret, Sweden´s largest opera festival. In autumn 2008 he performed in  Poet and Prophetess at the Cape Town Opera, South Africa. In winter 2009 Mr Lander returned to Norrlandsoperan, Umeå, where he performed the role of NED KEENE, in Britten’s Peter Grimes. In winter 2010 he sang the role of Athanael in Massenet’s Thais at the Gothenburg Opera. In winter 2011 Mr Lander could be seen performing PAPAGENO in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte at Spaghettioperan Regina and as Verdi’s MACBETH at Operahögskolan in Stockholm.

In summer 2012 Mr Lander sang the FORESTER in Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen at Läckö Slottsopera receiving critical acclaim from the press.

Mr. Lander has collaborated with a number of conductors such as Eric Ericsson, William Christie, Siegfried Köhler, Jeffrey Tate, Arnold Östman, Christophe Rousset, Andrea Quinn and Jan Latham-König. Mr. Lander has a broad repertoire of Lieder and oratorio giving concerts in Germany, Iceland, Israel, Austria, Sweden, Switzerland, and Spain. Numerous radio, television, and disc recordings document his artistic work.

Teaching has become an important part of Mr Landers work since 2002. He is presently employed at Operastudio/Kulturama in Stockholm and appears regularly as a guest teacher at Birkagårdens folkhögskola. Mr. Lander give lessons in vocal technique, interpretation, recitative and vocal acting. He has also staged several productions at these schools. From the fall of 2013 he also give singing lessons at the Operahögskolan, (University college of opera) in Stockholm.

Mr Lander studied at the Royal College of Music and later at the University College of Opera, both in Stockholm the city of his birth.
